| Swallowdale Camp is situated on Fairy
Lake in the well-known Muskokan "cottage country" region of Ontario. In 1878,
the property was originally a land grant by Queen Victoria and it
operated as a farm until 1905 when it became a very typical Muskoka
hotel. The outbreak of World War II ended the use of the property
as a resort. It was subsequently sold in 1943 to Mildred Targett
and Simone Walbank, who started a children’s summer camp on
the property the following year. The camp was named “Swallowdale” from
the title of a book by British author Arthur Ransome. Considering
the many swallows that abound the property, the name is certainly
justified.
Throughout the years, the operation
of the camp remained in the Walbank family. Ron Walbank is
the current owner of the property and facilities, but since 1996 CISS
(Canadian International Student
Services) has been overseeing the
general operation of Swallowdale Camp.
Swallowdale Camp is committed to
offering a stimulating, challenging, and safe learning environment
for campers of all nationalities. We strive to offer the highest
quality of camper programmes available and take pride in presenting
them as a distinctly Canadian experience.
Our staff are dedicated to providing
a meaningful and exciting learning experience within a warm and
caring community. The variety of programmes available ensures that
each camper has an opportunity to choose activities that best reflect
their individual needs and interests.
We believe that the international
experience generates learning on many levels. The unique environment
at Swallowdale Camp offers campers the opportunity to communicate
with other children from around the world and encourages them to
develop an appreciation and understanding of different cultures.
